Welcome to the MindTravel Blog: A Journey into What's Possible
Dec 03, 2024The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our mindset. But how do we access our mindset? How do we shift our mindset and transform it to our advantage?
I always love this quote from John Milton: The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.
And if we really think about our mind's experience, a very small amount of it is accessible to us in our everyday awareness. So much of our experience is happening beneath the surface, kind of like an iceberg, where only a small fraction is above the surface and most of it is beneath.
Our personal work – and the work I aim to foster with MindTravel – is all about accessing deeper levels of awareness so we can gain more choice and more freedom in our experience of the world moment to moment, day to day. And in so doing, we essentially are building this muscle to get out of our own way.
Anytime we have something we're trying to achieve, something that we want to make possible, if it's not happening, it's usually because of something we're doing to get in our own way. I've experienced that personally throughout my entire life. And the moment we recognize that, we can remove that obstacle.
But first – and this is something we’ll talk about quite a bit in these conversations – I’d like to introduce the idea of Radical Responsibility.
We distinguish radical responsibility from “ordinary” responsibility in that it's not about placing blame or condoning anything. Instead, this is strictly saying that our life is ours to choose. And since we're the only ones who can change our lives, then we must take responsibility for the state of our circumstances. No one else is going to change our circumstances for us.
Once we have that kind of empowerment, we're able to have agency to move forward and take real action. And so the components of radical responsibility are
- Awareness
- Acceptance
- Action
First, we must gain some awareness over whatever the issue is. If it's not in our awareness, then we certainly have no shot of taking responsibility for it. If we're not aware that we even can take responsibility for it, then we have to sit with it and accept it and really reconcile whatever emotions come up around it.
And from there, we're able to take right action, informed action, positive action to move forward in our lives. This enables this life of freedom that we all are aiming to achieve.
So as we continue these conversations, I’ll ask you to keep these ideas in mind as they truly are the foundational framework for addressing all the areas of the human condition that we’ll explore.
Let’s journey together.
